Introduction to Tenses:

Tense means time. Time is a natural concept. It is common in all the languages. In order to learn tenses well, one should practice helping verbs. Helping verbs help us to show time. The way we speak today, yesterday, tomorrow in our practical life, in the same way there are three tenses, present, past and future.

  1. If we have good command on helping verbs, our tense of the sentence will always be correct.

  2. Adverb of time is the key to check tense in a sentence.

  • Yesterday I have completed all the pending assignments. (AOT)

  • Now a day my father goes to office by his old scooter. (AOT)

Now a day my father is going to office by his old scooter.

Now a day means AAJKAL. This requires progressive action not the static action.

 

Present Indefinite

V1- Plural

V1 + s or es- Singular

Do – P, Does- S 

(Negative and Interrogative)

Past Indefinite

V2 (S AND P)- Simple Sentences

Did- (Negative and Interrogative)

Future Indefinite

Will- He, She, It, They, You

Shall- I, we

 

 

Present Continuous

Is, am, are + “ing” form

Past Continuous

Was, were + “ing” form

Future Continuous

Will be, shall be + “ing” from

 

Present Perfect

Has (s), Have (P) + v3

Past Perfect

Had (S & P) + v3

Future Perfect

Will have (S) + V3

Shall have (P) + V3

 

 

Present Perfect Continuous

has been (S), Have been (P) + ing form of verb

Past Perfect Continuous

Had been (S, P) + ing form

Future Perfect Continuous

Will have been (S),

Shall have been (P) + ing form

 

  1. Rigorous practice for perfect continuous

  2. Combo practice will clarify the illusion

I am preparing for competition and I have been developing my communication skills for a long time.  

When do we change tense of a sentence

  1. According to AOT.

  2. Direct and Indirect speech (PFP)

  1. Majnu said to Romika, “I deal with such issues creatively and come up with desired solution instantly.”

Majnu told Romika that he dealt with such issues creatively and came up with desired solution instantly.

  1. Ramesh said to us, “Intentions for actions define the state of our mind at a time.”

Ramesh told us that Intentions for actions define the state our mind at a time.

  1. Nikita says to Dimple, “You have performed vivaciously in this competition and the audience has been mesmerized with it.”

Nikita tells Dimple that she has performed vivaciously in this competition and the audience has been mesmerized with it.

  1. Sanjana will say to her mother, “I have inaugurated this center some days before and our business has been augmented with our fruitful endeavors.”

Sanjana will tell her mother that she has inaugurated this center some days before and their business has been augmented with their fruitful endeavors.

  1. Gaurav says to Mona, “I don’t find it disgusting as it has many beneficial aspects for my own amelioration.”

Gaurav tells Mona that he doesn’t find it disgusting as it has many beneficial aspects for his own amelioration.

 

Convert these sentences in passive.

  1. Sonu sings songs melodiously.

  1. Songs were sung melodiously by Sonu.

  2. Songs are being sung melodiously by Sonu.

  3. Songs are sang melodiously by Sonu.

  4. Songs are sung melodiously by Sonu.

Correct Answer: d)

Explanation: the given sentence is in present so its passive will also be in present.

  1. We are learning basics of grammar now a day.

  1. Basics of grammar are being learnt now a day by us.

  2. Basics of grammar were being learnt now a day by us.

  3. Basics of grammar are being learning now a day by us.

  4. Basics of grammar are being learned now a day by us.
