Use of “Used to”

Identification: To show habits of past.

Phrases are such group of words which have particular sense and it is clear when they are used in a sentence. They may not have literal meaning.

Syntax: Sub + used to + V1 + object + Complement 

  • PHLE MAI ASSAM ME JOB KARTA THA.

Earlier I used to do job in Assam.

  • BACHPAN ME MAI BAHUT SHARARAT KARTA THA.

I used to do a lot of mischievous activities in my childhood.

  • TUM MERA PEECHA KARTE THE AUR MAI BHUT TEZI BHAGTA THA.

You used to chase me and I used to run away very fast.

Would is used to describe the habits of past.

I talk to everyone politely.                 (Habit)

I am used to talk everyone politely. (Strong Habit)

I am accustomed to talk everyone politely.  

  • MAI APNE KAAM KO HMESHA SINCERITY SE KRTA HU.

I always do my work sincerely.

I am always used to do my work sincerely.

I am always accustomed to do my work sincerely.  

  • Rakesh shares his problems with me daily over a call.

Rakesh is used to share his problems with me daily over a call.

Rakesh is accustomed to share his problems with me daily over a call.
